As a rule, Newcastle guitar-drums duo the Gooch Palms write songs that are instantly catchy. But behind the simple rhymes and nagging choruses are Leroy Macqueen's devastating vocal range and bittersweet lyrics. Now based in L.A., he and drummer-singer Kat Friend ambush their primitive bubblegum punk with blinding emotional honesty. "Living Room Bop" celebrates dancing at home when you've got nowhere to go, "Standing in Line" updates the Ramones' life's-too-short urgency, and "Trackside Daze" nails Frankie Valli's falsetto. "Tiny Insight", meanwhile, smuggles in a Kinks-esque character study complete with Holdens, footy, and a beer so good it provokes tears.
